Welcome to block number 5! I can’t believe we are almost halfway through our BOM already!
Last month was your intro to curves and this month we’ll be working on curves again to lock in those skills! I actually think this is a simpler curve to work with, but I know the block looks a bit intimidating!
…Never fear! That’s what I’m here for!
OK, back to our regularly scheduled program…
The curve template we are working with this month was designed by me, I call it the Shorthand Template. I’ve included a paper version in your pattern (see Page 2), but if you’d prefer to get a hard template set, you can do that right here! I’ve even got a special discount for my BOMers this month. Just use coupon code MONTH5 at checkout to get 25% off!

The Shorthand Template is nothing without a great pattern! I am currently offering 4 different patterns that use this template and a 5th that comes free with every Hard Template Set.

Cutting
This month we’ll mostly be cutting templates! So if you’re not familiar with cutting curves or just want to see how I do it, make sure to check out this video. I’ve found the 28mm Rotary Cutter to be a game changer for me when cutting curves, so be sure to grab one if you’ve got it! And as always, remember to refer to your pattern for measurements so that there isn’t any confusion!
It’s also good to note that cutting circles (especially if using templates) is made much more accurate by using a small rotary cutter. I prefer the Martelli 28mm cutter, but other brands work as well! The only one that I have found does not work with my templates is the Fiskars brand.
Curves
Last month you learned how to sew a simple curve. This month we’re going to up our game a little bit and make a little bit more of a complex block with the Shorthand Template. If this feels overwhelming to you, make sure to check out this video before you get started – it’s much easier than you might think!
Trimming
Trimming always feels so intimidating, so I’ve got a video on that as well if you’re interested!
Finishing the Block
Now that you’re past the curves, it’s time to slow down and do some traditional piecing and trimming…so take a breath and let’s finish this block!
I KNOW! It is THE WORST to cut a block that you just made, BUT make sure that you hang on to that piece you’re trimming off…I’ve got an adorable bonus project for you at the end of the year that you just might want to make!
Need some help?
If you’re feeling a little intimidated by all of this, why not join the virtual class?
In my virtual class, we’ll cover each and every step. I’ll talk you through new skills, explain why and how we are doing things, and make it a little less scary! I’ve also included printable cheat sheets for techniques that might be new to you…great resources for down the road!
Now that you’ve got the know-how it’s time to sew! I’d love to see your progress in the Facebook group or on Instagram!
