By Hand | A New Fabric Collection by Amy Friend!

Whew, this week is a big one! You know that something big is about to happen when I’ve gone silent on the blog for a few weeks (which never happens!) Today I’m following up the release of my newest pattern, Bloctopus with my part in the By Hand Blog Hop. This beautiful blog hop highlights the gorgeous new fabric collection by Amy Friend. She created this fabric for Contempo, a division of Benartex.

By hand fabric collection by Amy Friend

The blue was perfect for an ocean filled with all sorts of movement and interest!

I have to admit, once in a great while I get a little obsessive over a fabric collection, and I’ll make everything out of it. Quilts, skirts, curtains, wallets…it can really get out of hand quickly. By Hand is one of those collections—and fair warning, you’re going to be seeing it here on the blog again in the very near future!

Fabric for curved piecing

I loved working with these colors throughout the whole process!

These gorgeous prints are just begging for the spotlight, which made it perfect for my two fabric quilt, Bloctopus.

Bloctopus Quilt Pattern

Meet Bobbi the Bloctopus! There are 8 tentacles, but if you prefer Bobbi to be a Jellyfish, I’m sure she won’t be offended!

Blue and Orange are the two complementary colors that you just can’t go wrong with. The contrast in these two fabrics is just perfect.

Ocean Inspired Quilting

I can’t even handle what the quilting adds to the whole quilt- between the detail in the fabrics and the quilting, this is full of rich textures!

I think my favorite part about this collection is the hand-created quality that you get from it. I have a feeling a lot of customers are going to be asking me if I painted my own fabric!

Ocean Creature Quilt Pattern

If you’d like to create your own ocean creature with this collection, I’ll let you in on what I used from the By Hand collection:

  • Ocean Background: Toothpicks Teal
  • Octopus Body: Mosaic Mango
  • Binding: Pluses Mango

And since this pattern just released, you can order your fabric, and get your copy of the pattern today! Just head on over to my shop and download or pre-order a hard copy!

  1. Cute quilt. Love the colors and the quilting. Have to admit, my 1st thought was of a jellyfish. Maybe that is because one of my granddaughters recently had a very close and painful encounter with one when we were at Gulf Shores, AL a couple of weeks ago. But it is a wonderful picture of an octopus.

    • Thanks Nancy,
That’s the beauty of a more abstracted design- it can be whatever you want it to be! I’m sorry your last jellyfish encounter was not a good one! I went to the Jellies Exhibit in Chicago a few years ago and it was incredible…no stings either!

Thanks for your kind words 🙂
