Block 8 | Small Terracotta

Welcome to block number 8! This month we will be dipping our toes into the waters of Foundation Paper Piecing!

If you’re an old pro at FPP, then you have the option of doing this pattern traditionally. If you’re new to my Freezer Paper method, then I think this is a GREAT month to try it out! Either way, I’ve got video and cheat sheets to guide you through from start to finish, so let’s get started!

This month we’re creating nine of these cute little pot blocks to complete one whole row! I won’t say that this is the most difficult month on the schedule, but it may be the most time-consuming. So, if you’re trying to get these done before the end of the month, make sure to give yourself plenty of time!

Ready for a new technique? Let’s get going!

If you haven’t already, make sure you finish up the first half of the year before moving on to block 8:

Get Set…

Supplies for the month

This month you will have two options: You can piece this traditionally (the first half of the pattern) or start in on our Foundation Paper Pieced series of blocks! If you’ve done FPP before and feel comfortable with a more advanced block next month, then you should be fine to go traditional this month. It’s really just a smaller version of last month’s block!

If you haven’t done FPP before OR are using directional fabrics and want them to go in the correct direction, I HIGHLY suggest you start FPP this month while it’s simple. Remember, our blocks get more advanced with each month!

If you’re curious about the supply list for this month, I’ve got all supplies listed for you below:

Cutting

This month we’re just cutting a few squares and triangles! Super simple – you got this! If you are piecing traditionally, there’s really not much of a difference from last month!

If you are doing FPP you are welcome to precut your pieces using the cutting chart so that everything is sized and ready to go! It’s important to know that the letter numbers of each block that was cut are labeled on the FPP templates for you.

Just in case you didn’t see it above, here’s a reminder:

Foundation Paper Piecing with Freezer Paper

Now. I know a lot of you were worried about FPP. I’m here to say, everything is going to be just fine! Once you get going I just know you’re going to love this technique! I’m going to show you how to do it with Freezer Paper. This is my favorite technique and I think you’ll love it too (especially if you’re used to ripping traditional paper at the end of your project). If you haven’t done FPP in a while, I always suggest doing a simple block to refresh your mind before getting started on this new twist. Enjoy this tutorial below!

What About Directional Prints?!

Wondering why in the world you chose to work with a directional print? It’s OK, we’ve all been there! I’m going to show you how to handle directional prints in the video tutorial below. Grab a cup of tea, watch through the entire video and make sure to practice on scrap fabrics before digging into this block!

Need some help?

If you’re feeling a little intimidated by all of this, why not join the virtual class?

In my virtual class, we’ll cover each and every step. I’ll talk you through new skills, explain why and how we are doing things, and make it a little less scary! I’ve also included printable cheat sheets for techniques that might be new to you…great resources for down the road!

Now that you’ve got the know-how it’s time to sew! I’d love to see your progress in the Facebook group or on Instagram!
